Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma (pronounced as "mez-o-thee-lee-omah") is an uncommon form of cancer, usually associated with previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant (cancerous) cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart).

The most common form of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma which deals with the lungs. The symptoms results from pleural effusion which is a collection of fluid between the two layers of the pleura. Some of the symptoms may be difficulty in breathing, weight loss, fever, persistent coughs, and difficulty swallowing.

The second form of mesothelioma is peritoneal mesothelioma which deals with the abdomen. The symptoms results from collections of fluids in abdomen called ascites. It causes the swelling of the abdomen, and results in loss of appetite, bowel obstruction, anaemia, fever, and nausea.

The third and the rarest form of mesothelioma is pericardial mesothelioma which deals with the heart. The symptoms results from cancer affecting the heart and the cavity that surrounds the heart. Some of the symptoms may be chest pain, shortness of breath, and palpitations.

The average life span is about six months for those diagnosed with Mesothelioma and about three thousand Americans are stricken with this form of cancer every year. Most people who are inflicted with this form of cancer have been around asbestos. Often it is those who have worked around asbestos, being exposed to its harmful effect. Unfortunately, it is difficult to diagnose mesothelioma due to large latency in time before the diagnosis and the rate of progression of mesothelioma.

According to Environmental Protection Agency, the reason why asbestos is dangerous is because asbestos is made up of microscopic bundles of fibers that may become airborne when distributed and it is well documented that breathing asbestos fibers increases the risk of cancer in people. Essentially, asbestos is a human carcinogen. For more information on asbestos, please visit the Environmental Protection Agency website, www.epa.gov.
